FAQ: Unclassified & Western Deans' Agreement Students
How do I take a course within the School of Population & Public Health?
If you are a current Graduate Student at another Western Canadian University, you can take any UBC graduate course via the Western Deans' Agreement (see FAQ below).
If you are not a current student, you need to apply to UBC as an Unclassified Student and follow the appropriate process (see FAQ below).
If you are a current UBC Undergraduate Student, complete the Faculty of Graduate Studies form and obtain permission from the Instructor. More information on eligibility can be found on the Graduate Studies website.

I want to take an SPPH course related to the MPH program as an Unclassified Student. What do I do?
First you must register with the University of British Columbia as an Unclassified Student via the Student Service Centre (SSC).
Once registered, read the Faculty of Graduate Studies policy on unclassified students and then complete the appropriate form available on the Faculty of Graduate Studies Forms webpage.
Next, obtain permission from the Instructor to be registered in the course. Then, send the form and Instructor permission (email is acceptable) to Jennifer Suratos so the Program Director can sign it off.
Applications are then sent to the UBC Faculty of Graduate Studies for processing and registration. They will contact applicants to let them know of their success of registering into the course, fees, etc.

I am registered at a different University and I want to take an SPPH course related to the MPH program through the Western Deans' Agreement. What do I do?
Please contact your home university's Graduate Studies department for the WDA form. This request must first be approved by the home university (Home Institution), who will then send the form to the UBC Faculty of Graduate Studies (FoGS) office (UBC is the Host Institution). This process may take a few weeks.
In the meantime, please obtain permission from the SPPH Instructor to take their course and send it to Jennifer Suratos. The MPH Program Director will then sign off on the WDA form when we receive it and it will be sent back to UBC FoGS, who will then send a letter to the student and home university confirming registration. The whole process can take some time so please be patient and get the request in to your home university as early as possible.

If I take an SPPH course, will this increase my chances of getting into the MPH program?
Taking one or more courses as an Unclassified Student does not guarantee acceptance into any UBC graduate program—this is Faculty of Graduate Studies policy.
Many unsuccessful and future MPH applicants choose to take our courses for a variety of reasons: to try to boost their GPA for admission, to be able to get a head start on the program, to get know the School of Population & Public Health a bit more, etc. This does not necessarily increase an applicant's chance of getting admitted to the MPH program. Admission is very competitive for the MPH program and taking courses as an unclassified student can be quite costly (approximately $1000 per course). Please consider this decision very carefully.
